ephem. Comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) passed its clos-est point to Earth, 0.364 AU, on 23 July 2000, 3 days before it reached perihelion. Coinci-dentally, the comet completely disintegrated within a few days of its closest approach to Earth. The timing of this event was ideal because astronomers taking advantage of the favorable geometric conditions to observe C/1999 S4: Hubble Optical Images From July 5 to 7, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph tracked comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR). The first photograph (left) shows a dramatic increase in its brightness.

C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) war ein Komet, von dem erwartet wurde, dass er im Juli 2000 mit bloßem Auge beobachtet werden könnte. Its nucleus underwent multiple fragmentations culminating in the complete disruption around July 20, 2000.

On July 14, 2000 the Chandra X-ray Observatory imaged the comet repeatedly for a total of 2 ½ hours and detected X-rays from oxygen and nitrogen ions.
